Vitamin A or peeling in the summer – is it possible?

Vitamin A summer

Summer is coming! Facials and products with vitamin A (retinol, retinoic acid) or peels can make your skin extra sensitive to sunlight. That's why it's best to avoid intensive treatments, especially during this period. Aggressive ingredients or excessive exfoliation can irritate the skin, cause redness and even damage the skin barrier (even in winter, by the way).

Why can you use our retinol cream (vitamin A) and peeling face at home use it in the summer? We explain!

Myth: Exfoliation makes your skin thinner

It is often thought that the skin would become thinner by using a peeling. This is not the case. The upper dead skin layer is, as it were, 'peeled off' - which makes your skin clean, fresh and radiant again. But the total thickness of the skin layer does not become thinner. In fact: from research it turns out that with long-term use of 5-10% glycolic acid, the outer layer of the skin actually becomes thicker. Glycolic acid is a popular ingredient in a fruit acid peeling for home use

Can you do a peel in the summer?

Although your skin does not become thinner due to a peeling, your skin can become more sensitive to sunlight. That is why it is extra important to protect your skin well by wearing a hat or cap and using sunscreen. This prevents burning and the development of inflammation, pigment spots or skin problems such as perioral dermatitis (rash around nose and mouth). After a strong peeling treatment, skin therapists advise staying out of the sun for at least 4 to 6 weeks and using a minimum SPF of 30.

Despite all precautions, do you still suffer from pigment spots? Fortunately, there is a way to How to remove pigment spots on the face naturally.

Whether it is wise for you to have a peeling this summer depends mainly on your skin type and the type of peeling.

  • Skin type: Some skin types are more sensitive to sunlight than others. Do you quickly suffer from irritated or dry skin? Then only use mild peels and special skincare for sensitive skin. These have a milder effect, but can be just as effective!
  • Type of peeling: In the summer we recommend using only mild and superficial peels. Combine this with a good natural face care to reduce the risk of sun damage.

When is it better not to do a home peeling?

Are you pregnant? Your skin may react differently to cosmetics. To be on the safe side, it is better not to use a peeling during this period. We also recommend caution if you have sensitive skin or skin problems such as eczema. Read more about this in our eczema face tips.

And what about vitamin A and sun?

Are you looking for a miracle cure for wrinkles? Vitamin A, also known as retinol, is a common ingredient in the treatment of wrinkles and acne. It increases the elasticity and density of the skin, among other things.

But what about the sun? Retinol can also make the skin sensitive to UV radiation. In general, it is advised to avoid the sun as much as possible when using a vitamin A acid cream and to protect your skin from UV radiation. Retinoids in high concentrations or when used incorrectly can also damage and irritate the skin. Which is exactly what you don't want.

Vitamin A Acid Side Effects

One of the most important retinol side effects In addition to sun sensitivity, there are skin reactions around the mouth and eyes. For example, flaking, a burning sensation and redness. This can occur even months after use.

Good news! You don't have these annoying side effects with NovoRetin™, the natural form of Retinol that we use in Flow RetinLift. This form slows down the breakdown of naturally occurring retinoic acid and thus supports the natural strength of your skin. In other words, no side effects but the positive effects of vitamin A. This makes this retinol cream even for sensitive skin and during the last trimesters of pregnancy. Unlike other retinol products.
