Why do you get dandruff in your beard and moustache?
This is usually due to dry skin under your beard, and sometimes to skin problems like eczema. Causes range from weather influences and improper beard care to stress and nutritional deficiencies. By understanding the source of the flakes in your beard, you can treat and prevent them much more effectively.
What to do about dandruff in your beard?
Whatever the cause, the treatment for beard dandruff is generally the same:
Ensure adequate hydration and use natural care and mild products that do not unnecessarily irritate or dry out your skin.
Flakes due to dry skin under your beard
The most common cause of (white) flakes on your beard is therefore sensitive, dry skin. Just like dry facial skin, this can also occur under your beard or mustache. The skin here receives less air and becomes irritated more quickly, especially if the natural moisture balance is disrupted. As a result, dead skin cells accumulate, which then flake off.
Major causes of dry skin under your beard are often a combination of external and internal factors:
● Climate and environment: Cold, wind, air conditioning and dry heating air.
● Showering incorrectly: Showering too hot or for too long dries out the skin.
● Insufficient or excessive cleansing : Washing too little can cause a buildup of dead skin cells and product residue, but cleansing too often or too aggressively actually leads to dryness.
● Aggressive products : Shampoos and soaps containing sulfates or alcohol remove too many natural oils that actually protect your skin. Special beard shampoos can also sometimes be too aggressive, as can alcohol-based aftershave. You don't have to worry about this with our collection of natural grooming for men.
● Shaving and skin irritation : Flakes after shaving are often the result of irritated skin, a damaged skin barrier, or sensitive skin.
● Stress and hormonal fluctuations: Yes, really. Stress (high cortisol levels) can severely disrupt your skin. Hormonal changes can also affect sebum production.
● Unhealthy diet and insufficient hydration : Vitamins and minerals such as zinc, biotin, copper, and selenium play a role in skin and hair health. Deficiencies can worsen flaking. Insufficient hydration can also make the skin drier (and we're talking about water, not beer ;-)).
● Scratching : very tempting when you itch, but it worsens the scales in your beard or mustache.
H3 Flakes due to skin problems
Are the flakes on your beard more yellowish or oily, and do you notice that the skin underneath is red, irritated, or sensitive? Then you are probably not just dealing with dry skin under your beard, but with a skin problem such as psoriasis, seborrheic eczema , or beard dandruff (a mild form of eczema). This often results in sticky, stubborn flakes in the beard and hair, sometimes accompanied by itching, burning, or even minor inflammation.
In such cases, it is especially important to choose products that help restore your skin barrier and restore the yeast balance – without drying out your skin. Want to know more? Check out our blog about beard dandruff and how best to treat it.
Here's what you can do about dandruff on your beard: 3 easy steps
Hydration is the key to reducing beard flakes caused by dry skin. Give the skin under your beard as much attention as the rest of your face, and you'll often see results within a few weeks.
1. Use the best beard shampoo against dandruff (that doesn't dry out your skin)
Which beard shampoo is best for dandruff? A mild organic shampoo bar with natural ingredients, free from sulfates and synthetic perfume. These protect the dry skin under your beard and keep your natural barrier intact.
Please note: dry skin flakes in your beard can also occur with oily skin types. That sounds contradictory, but it is not uncommon. The skin produces more sebum in response to a lack of moisture. As a result, the skin appears oily, but it still lacks moisture. The consequence? Accelerated cell renewal and, consequently, more flakes.
For oily, dehydrated skin : choose a mild beard flake shampoo that cleanses the skin without drying it out, but helps regulate excessive sebum production. A good option is a shampoo bar with tea tree oil . This oil has a natural purifying effect and supports the skin's balance, making the skin calmer and less prone to flaking.
For dry or sensitive skin : opt for a gentle, restorative shampoo for dry scalps, such as the Hemp shampoo bar. This intensively nourishes the skin and helps strengthen the skin barrier, so that moisture is better retained and irritation decreases.
2. Here's how to moisturize the dry skin under your beard
After washing, it is important to hydrate the skin immediately (!) with a moisturizer or refreshing face spray; this ensures that moisture can penetrate deeper into the skin. Use a spray or cream before your oil. Hydration = water, not fat. A hydrating face spray is light, mists finely between the hairs, and ensures that oil is absorbed better afterwards.
Tip: refreshment for in between
A diluted apple cider vinegar rinse can help restore your skin's pH and refresh the skin under your beard. This is convenient, as you can simply do it at the sink without having to take a full shower. Apple cider vinegar also works against itching caused by flakes in your beard. Don't worry about the smell of apple cider vinegar; it will have dissipated before you leave.
3. Care for beard with an anti-flake beard oil
Apply a nourishing anti-dandruff beard oil daily. Buying organic argan oil is a good option: this oil absorbs quickly, nourishes intensely, and leaves no greasy residue. Always apply oil to slightly damp skin (immediately after step 2) to lock in the hydration optimally. Then gently comb the oil through your beard.
Extra care for your beard
A soft beard brush can help remove dead skin cells and thus improve the absorption of moisturizing products. Especially with a thin or short beard, exfoliating can help combat flakes. For example, with a facial scrub . Be careful not to use aggressive scrubs, as these can actually cause damage. Do not use a scrub more than 1 to 2 times a week at most, and not when you are suffering from redness or inflammation.
This routine will help you remove flakes from your beard without irritating your skin!
