Why is makeup without parabens better?
To judge why make-up without parabens is better, it is useful to understand what parabens actually are. Parabens are preservatives and this is an important part of cosmetics. Because without (or bad) preservatives, your make-up will not last long and will be full of bacteria in no time. This naturally causes skin problems, so preservatives are functional in that sense. Parabens are an effective preservative, little is needed to keep make-up durable.
The problem is that many make-up contain far more preservatives than necessary. Parabens are known as Xenoestrogens. These are substances with an estrogen-like effect that disrupt the hormone balance. Studies have shown that this can lead to increased estrogen levels in the long term. Because of this parabens are related to eg
breast cancer of
infertility.
There are
different types of parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben or benzylparaben) with a big difference in safety. Unfortunately, there is still too little research into the actual health effects of parabens. To be on the safe side, it is better to avoid parabens and opt for make-up with natural preservatives.
When it says on your makeup; without parabens, pay attention if still good. It does not mean that no other harmful substances have been added to the product!
The importance of make up without synthetic perfume
Synthetic perfume is the main cause of skin irritation. When there is 'perfume' on a make-up label, you often do not know what perfume it is, or where it comes from. It can cause allergic reactions and be reactive to your skin. The main consequences are red or itchy spots. When you suffer from sensitive skin or impurities such as acne, perfume can make this worse.
In some cases, the use of perfume in make-up products can also perioral dermatitis cause. This skin condition is also known as clown eczema. It is strongly associated with overuse of strong synthetic products and hypersensitivity.
Synthetic perfume can also cause collagen breakdown, which you will only notice after decades. This results in wrinkles and sagging skin faster. It makes your skin more susceptible to external influences and hinders the skin's recovery process. That is why you should always avoid synthetic perfume in make up regardless of your age or skin type.
You can of course also be sensitive to certain natural essential oils as a fragrance ingredient in make up. Always check the ingredients on the packaging in advance.
